Locker Decorating

For Halloween, the students got a special bag that had all kinds of spooky items in it that they decorated their doors with. The students were able to use as much time as needed but were assessed on their creative juices to obtain one clear winner. Here are most of the lockers.

Catching up with the Month of October...

October has been a busy month here at Fisher Park... so much so that I have been lacking in posting on a regular basis. Here are some things that have been going on the last three weeks.

Monster Exchange has been completed. The students had a fun time during the lead up and drawing of their peers monsters. Their hard work, proof reading, editing and publishing their descriptions was fantastic. Well done everyone.

We were given a special performance by a witch with a scientific specialty. After some elbow grease with an actual liver... and some other additives... the pumpkin came to life to shoot out some bubbly goo.. Yuk.

MacSkimming

Hey Folks,
Today we went out to MacSkimming for some Outdoor Education. The students learned about predators and prey and we played a fun simulation game in the forest. After a nice campfire and roasting hotdogs we went out for a nature walk into the woods. Many students found salamanders and frogs. It was a great day to be spent outdoors.

Monster Exchange

Today the students explored the possibilities surrounding creating and drawing a monster with pencil, software or collage. Of course nobody chose to do a collage, but the hand drawn and software expressed monsters were well done. The creative juices were flowing.
In math, the students looked at tangrams and their relationships to ratio.
Everyone is very excited for the field trip to Gatineau Park tomorrow. King Mountain here we come. Stay tuned for some picks.

Basket and Gum Balls

Today in Math the students looked at volume and tried to guess the amount of gumballs that were in a jar using mathematical calculations. The students with the most accurate guess win the jar full of gum. Today also marked the beginning of basketball in gym with some new skills and drills and finished with a good old fashioned game of BUMP.

Optimism

Something to think about over the weekend:

Our Literacy Walls to date....

What we have made together, this year...... More learning to come....

Wednesday at the Fish Aquarium....

We spent our Wednesday morning heading out to Big Al's Aquarium. Each student selected their own fish for the classroom aquarium after a very careful selection process. We saw all kinds of neat exotic fish, fresh and salt water tanks and even a massive tarantula. Overall, we all had a great time and even brought back a leaky aquarium that will be turned into a terrarium. (for scientific purposes only of course)

Tomorrow is a new day...

Today, In English we learned about how articles present a main idea and how main ideas are supported. In Social Studies, we each were assigned a different French Explorer and researched what each contributed to Canada.

Everyone is excited to see what tomorrow brings and what kinds of fish are at BIG ALS Aquarium.

On the weekend....

Over the weekend I (Shawn) put up a springless trampoline. After about an hour and one half, and many aches and pains later; the trampoline was up. The benefits of a springless trampoline far outweighs the use of a traditional spring trampoline.

The benefits can be viewed here in this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ReyP39sNtxE

Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief

Today marked the beginning of our classroom novel study. The novel was delivered in a read aloud format and discussed after the end of the chapter. The book will be tied into our descriptive writing focus and our reading strategy of visualizing. The students all seemed very interested in the chapter and were eager to share their thoughts on what had happened.

All About me Boxes - Canadian History - Descriptive Writing

Today marked the beginning of what direction we are going to take in the researching of Canadian History. Students decided what aspects of the Unit most interested them. Some questions that were asked was why did settlers choose to come to Canada?; Who chose to have their country come here?; What did we trade with the natives?

In English students are making their ALL ABOUT ME boxes which contains five items that best describe themselves. Once completed the students will give a brief presentation of all the items and will be assessed based on their oral skills. Further, we jumped into starting our descriptive writing and what makes a sentence more descriptive and why it is important for readers to have description to add interest.... More to follow.

I can't believe its not Friday!!...

Once again we had a new addition to our classroom and we currently sit at eight students with three still remaining.  We had our first gym class today that was a friendly game of pinball dodgeball. Following gym the students had an art lesson that consisted of placing a collage on their agendas. With our population size growing the students are figuring out where they fit in and the teachers are figuring out how the students learn. Stay tuned.

Scratching the Surface...

Today we added two more to our Fisher Park classroom. In the morning we worked with Tessellations and the uses of an agenda. Finding out why certain things are in our agenda was one of many questions we explored. Also, if you were to ask any of us how many spiders we swallow each year, the students here at fisher park have your answer.

Day One is Done!!

Day 1 of the school year is officially in the books. Everyone gave their news, introductions and what they did over the summer. The afternoon was tipped off with a lunch at the Hintonburger restaurant and a walk around Westboro to get rid of the meals in our stomachs. Day 1 is done.... bring on tomorrow!

New Beginnings

Welcome everyone to Shawn's class

I have always been fond of this poem since I was expected to read and analyse it in my grade nine English class; I find it fitting for us, me as your teacher and you as the students.

The Road Not Taken
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
